ART

Admittedly, I am woefully clueless when it comes to art and the great artists of our history and present. It doesn't stop me, for better or for worse, from pursuing artistic forms of self-expression myself. All of my art is 100% electronic. I use no physical instruments except for my computer, public domain photography, and maybe some of my own.

though I've tried...

I detest fan-manic artwork. I usually find the workings of these people to be either overemotional, just plain bad, or a mix of the two. Either way, fan-art of any celebrity I usually avoid like the plague. However, I got a hold of Sarah Mclachlan's new single and video "fallen", and really felt compelled to do something on it. My intention was to use her choice shots but not to overemphasize the emotion in the video. Hopefully I got the mix right and didn't overdo it. It's a bunch of overlays, some color contrasting, dodging, and bit of of other stuff. I only had it at 640x480 because that's the largest I could get the video without it looking like pac man. Write me and let me know what you think.

No Alarms and No surprises, please

This is an experiment on several different methods, the main using color dodge and color burn to put more focus on the subject. The outer edge is dodged to brighten the brush strokes and obscure the text. The interior is burned with a blue overlay to accentuate the pattern on the globe and the shadows. The text is various expositions and lyrics used for texture and noise. After a while I just decided to pile it all on and even the distribution.

What I was happy with was how the white, blue and red bled together. Kind of similar to Radiohead's "OK Computer" album cover.

Oooo, nice water refraction there

This is the first animation I've done in years worth showing. I borrowed the water material idea from a book titled 3D Studio Max 3 Magic from New Riders. They illustrate it's value with still shots, while I wanted to see how it performed in animation. The important part to notice in this scene is the reflection/refraction and opacity in the water. I was real happy with the results and tried something a bit more abstract(right-click and save to disk).

Tasty Blocks, mmmm

This is the first 3d block desktop I made with Photoshop. In my opinion, it is the better of the two.

give me one more medicated peaceful moment
Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Rung

These too I created using my Canon S45 and my bathroom shower curtain. I wanted to use something that would go from focus to out-of-focus and something I could colorize. What I actually did was take the photo in color, selected the color range associated with the curtain, copied it to the clipboard. Converted the picture to grayscale and then back to RGB(it will still stay grayscale, but you can add color now) and then add back in the curtain.

I enjoyed the way "Rung" came out because the wording has a Alfred Hitchcock look to them. That grainy 50's film feel. There's a full B&W version that looks good that I may add some other time.

"Fuzzy World" was an experiement with different filters on different aspects of the shot. I noisied-up the curtains and applied a motion filter to them, then added some graininess to the shower tile. I was going to add a halo effect that was generated by the flash off the shower rung, but it wouldn't co-operate.

For those who don't know, Wild Magnolia is a cajun restaurant/bar here in Greensboro that does live music. The place can get a little wild at times, overzealous guitarist doing gratuitous guitar solo on top of bar two inches away from my beer before running off to play and dance for the women waiting outside the women's bathroom.

are we falling?

This is an idea I took after checking out a site that showed how to cubics on Photoshop. The actual desktop is only slightly different from the thumbnail. Well actually a big difference, let's see if you can pick up on it. To create the image, simply to go filter --> render --> 3D Render and then makes gobs of cubes, then use the rotate them over until you have the desired effect. I added a blur to this one to get the illusion of depth. First response was that of nausea, due to the blurryness, but hopefully that won't be your perception. lol.

What's that floating in there?

This is a piece I did using 3D Studio MAX 3.0 and Photoshop 7.0, a first for this site but not for me. I've been going through a dada phase lately with my writing and my artwork. With my artwork, I just try to make the curves look smooth and flowing and trying not to touch each other. Outside of that, most anything goes. It may lack the message a political cartoon may convey or the stark contrast of Ansel Adams(You know, that guy who does the ultra-sharp photo landscapes... Refer to my non-knowledge of artists above!!!), but maybe the eye candy will please your eye enough to put it on your desktop for a couple of weeks.

It was a pill to render, since the opacity is determined by raytracing which essentially requires the scene to be "drawn" several times before it is actually rendered. I rendered it in letterbox format and used photoshop for the white backdrop and text. The stream logo is two copies of the text with a motion blur set to 45° the length to some arbitrary number(nothing too large).

More to come.

My First Desktop! It's Roxorz!

This is my first attempt at a wallpaper for your computer. This was tailored toward users of the BlackBox Shell replacement for windows. In short, a Shell replacement replaces the grey toolbar and icons normally found in every version of windows since 95. This wallpaper can be used for any OS. This incorporates Viewscreen 1.5 from the previous entry as well to help bring some color to the screen. Enjoy!

Viewsonic 1.5

Created: 2/16/2003 In the evenings, I enjoy catching up on my Viewsonic over a nice glass of Pinot Noir.
Application: Photoshop 5.5
Dimensions: Viewscreen 1.5(800x600)

I've been working on this one a bit more, trying to get some more lighting effects with the case itself. I found a neat tutorial over at Phong for metal tutorials that did the trick. It made enough difference to warrant a .5 versioning. This version will also be incorporated into my first wallpaper coming shortly.

This is a bit of something else I've been working on lately. I started on this to work on my lens images, lighting, photo manip., etc. I had a hard time finding arrows to use with what I had, so I used fountainheads, which turned out better than I expected. The first image in the viewscreen is one I found on DeviantArt which I grayscaled and placed under the orange lens and screenlines. I copied the cherry color and colored it in for effect. The next image was a self-picture of a friend.

Tendril

A bit of trendy stuff I cooked up one night after the consumption of some Tiramisu. The tendrils are done using a blue triangle and applying a shear, using a seperate layer for the highlights and lowering the transparency on both. I'm not crazy about the font, but it's legiable. The racing star background and white mast were added as an afterthought.

I mainly work in photoshop 5.5(because I'm not addicted to upgrading), 3D StudioMax 3.0, and will eventually do some work in Gimp if not for the purpose of supporting the freeware community. Flash may be in the cards as well, just because of the potentially cool schtuff you can do with it.

Galleries will start appearing with time, some are pretty old and from previous sites, but hopefully I'll be adding new ones soon as well. Keep checking in!

Screenshot

Here's a current screenshot of my desktop, featuring wallpaper from Seafairy, a wonderful artist from Ireland. If you're curious about the look, I'm using Windows XP pro and replaced the start bar(explorer) with xoblite for windows shell(a blackbox for windows branch, using Iceqube theme) to get the floating menu and the lean n' mean system bar at the bottom. There's a transparent control for Winamp on the left as well. The actual windows have an OSX style(matches the winamp skin to a tee) that can be attained via StyleXP, a little app that resides as a service, but with the memory and system savings from BB4W, it's still faster than with what comes out of the box. I don't usually run trillian on transparency, but I wanted to show more of the wallpaper and still make it look somewhat "used".
